  • Epson has partnered with renowned Japanese fashion designer Yuima Nakazato and his eponymous YUIMA NAKAZATO brand at Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week Spring - Summer 2023 to unveil creations that are both stunning and sustainable. In addition to utilizing Epson's digital textile printing to reproduce his unique and creative worldview, YUIMA NAKAZATO realized some of its creations with the help of a new, more sustainable and potentially industry-transforming textile production process.

Epson's dry fiber technology, which is already used commercially to recycle office paper and which requires virtually no water, has been adapted to produce printable non-woven fabric from used garments. The new fabric production process was revealed in Paris as part of a three-year collaboration between Epson and YUIMA NAKAZATO and was used in the creation of items for the first time during the latter's runway show at the Palais de Tokyo on January 25, 2023.

The collaboration between Epson and YUIMA NAKAZATO builds on the success of the company's printing support for his couture and evolves the level of his creations to enable the low-impact production of high-quality custom garments. Both Epson and YUIMA NAKAZATO are keen to raise awareness of the water and material waste associated with excess production. The Paris Show illustrates how switching to digital textile printing using more environmentally friendly pigment inks offers the fashion industry a more sustainable and less wasteful means of textile printing.

The fabric taken to create the latest YUIMA NAKAZATO fashion line was derived from material from used garments sourced from Africa, the destination for many discarded garments from elsewhere in the world. Nakazato visited Kenya where he collected around 150 kg of waste garment material destined for the "clothes mountain" of discarded textiles he encountered there. Epson then applied its dry fiber process to produce over 50 metres of new re-fiberised non-woven fabric, some of which was used for printing with pigment inks with Epson's Monna Lisa digital printing technology.

Hitoshi Igarashi from Epson's Printing Solutions Division explains the importance of the technology: "Although in its early stages, Epson believes its dry fiber technology combined with pigment ink digital printing could offer the fashion industry a much more sustainable future, significantly reducing water use while allowing designers the freedom to fully express their creativity.

"Epson's Environmental Vision is committed to contributing to a circular economy, and this development could be one step towards achieving this. Dry fiber technology applied to the fashion industry offers the possibility of producing material for new clothes that have been recycled from used garments."

In a trial of distributed printing for venue decoration, Epson inkjet printers in Japan and France with remote support from Epson engineers were used to create decorations in the venue space. Both Epson and YUIMA NAKAZATO intend to continue exploring the possibilities for contributing to a more sustainable fashion industry.

Digital textile printing using pigment inks offers a far more sustainable approach to the fabric production process. compared with traditional analog methods. In addition to pigment inks requiring significantly less water, the digital process requires far fewer stages and is less complex. Unlike analog it requires no plate production, washing or storage, results in little disposal of used inks, and allows on-demand production that contributes to less waste.

2 Epson's Monna Lisa digital Direct-to-Fabric printers use less water compared with analog methods. Pigment inks are more eco-friendly and Epson GENESTA pigment inks are GOTS approved by ECOCERT.

  • ColDesi, Inc announced the release of the new DigitalHeat FX DTF-24H4 high volume direct-to-film printer.

High volume, automated DTF printers have an integrated roll-fed film printer and an integrated hot melt applicator and belt dryer. All producing what the company reports as the best quality fabric (t-shirt) transfers on the market.

Following on the success of the record-breaking DigitalHeat FX DTF-24H2, which is a 24” DTF printing powerhouse with two print heads, ColDesi has released the Four head DigitalHeat FX DTF-24H4.

The new DTF printer from ColDesi prints at an astounding 145-155 linear ft. of full-colour film printing per hour, which equates to between 250 and 350 full shirt front transfers.

But the company is equally proud of the technological advancements made in this latest model.

“Whether you’re running a one machine shop, adding transfer production to a high-volume business or replacing expensive direct to garment printers, power requirements are a big deal,” said Don Copeland, digital product manager for ColDesi. “We’ve worked with our in-house R&D team (you might know them as BelQuette Technologies) to reduce the requirements for BOTH the printer and the dryer to a single 30AMP, 220v circuit or run 2 systems off a single 50AMP, 220v circuit! Not only does this cut initial setup costs it can save literally hundreds, even thousands of dollars in power costs over the course of a year – especially for multi-printer shops.”

For a full demonstration of the product and capabilities, ColDesi has provided the following video.

“The DigitalHeat FX DTF-24H2 2 head machine is rated at between 45 and 55 linear feet per hour production, which is approximately 100 full front transfers per hour, which is more than enough volume for most shops,” commented Mike Angel, head of ColDesi OnDemand software programs. “But the new four head is more than three times as productive which meets virtually ANY demand”.

Other advances include a smoother operation for fewer touches per print job and a centralised control location to reduce interface time overall.

Management also said that just like all of the ColDesi digital systems the DTF line comes with a self-paced online training program that you can put any and all of your operators through as well as included technical support for as long as you own the machine. Every printer comes to you fully assembled, test printed, calibrated, and ready to print – already mounted on the stand. It is simply a matter of installing the print software, rolling the printer and shaker/dryer up to one another, powering up, and going through the simple out-of-box start-up instructions and you are printing transfers – typically within 2-3 hours.

    January 07 2020

“Cutting edge, NEW technology is what’s at the heart of the G4 Direct to Garment Printer from ColDesi.” Commented Mark Stephenson, Director of Marketing.

With more than 50 years of combined experience in digital printing, embroidery, and the bling industry, ColDesi is excited to announce the release of their new, innovative direct-to-garment printer.

Designed for speed and functionality, the cutting-edge DTG G4 features a patented Vacuum Platen, custom designed Kodacolor inks and a new touch screen interface.

    New Product Highlights:

 Time saving vaccuum platen (no hooping required)
 Custom formulated inks with higher saturation & density
     Self-regulated maintence
 Onboard print queue for PC-free operation

“The Vacuum Platen can easily save 15-20 seconds, or even more, of loading and unloading garments,” DTG Product Manager Jerid Hill said. “High productivity isn’t only about how fast the printer prints, it’s also material handling, the G4 Vacuum Platen absolutely increases productivity, even on printers with similar speeds.”

ColDesi reports that the majority of the maintenance for the G4 is self-regulated. Hill noted that this give users more confidence that they will have perfect prints.

The G4 uses custom inks, powered by Kodacolor from Kodak, that have been specifically formulated for direct to garment printing.

“Since we couple the Kodacolor inks with our G4 printer, the increased densities of ink and higher saturation of colors allows the G4 to print faster and use less ink,” Hill said.

The G4 also contains an onboard print queue, allowing users to save time during production.

“I’m positive the G4 will not only be a great experience for the end user, but it has the potential to make non-believers of DTG our spokespeople,” Hill said.
