  • Quote & Print Software will have ‘something for everyone’ at its Visual Impact stand, with a focus on the new Cloud Print ERP software, and the launch of a new Label & Carton Packaging Print ERP module to join large-format, sheet-fed and digital print ERP software in the company’s expansive range.

The 42-year-old Australian software house has made its name delivering print ERP solutions for print service providers in Australia and across the Asia Pacific and Middle East regions, installing more than 1000+ printers in 12 countries.

Managing Director Shanti Kumar says the company will take the opportunity provided by the industry’s leading regional show to showcase this new offering, as well as modules for a range of sectors, including a totally new Label & Carton Packaging Print ERP module.

“Our robust software solutions have been designed specifically to meet the needs of print service providers, large and small, covering all aspects of the global print and packaging industry,” Kumar says, “and we’ll be showcasing a full range at Visual Impact, Sydney with a special focus on new releases.”

Over the past five years, Kumar says the company has invested considerable resources to develop its Cloud Print ERP solution which uses the latest Microsoft technology and data hosted at the Microsoft Data Centre in Sydney. The solution, based on Sofware as a Service (SaaS) or ‘cloud’ model, includes mobile applications for IOS and Android and is integrated to MYOB, Xero and a number of web-2-print solutions and is available on a subscription service based on the modules included and number of users.

“This allows users to benefit from a turnkey solution for a fixed rental price, with everything included – software, any modifications required, and support from one of our senior print consultants,” Kumar says.

“The benefits of using a cloud-based solution are many – chief among them is the ability to access information anytime, anywhere, plus it also saves about 30% in infrastructure costs, because users do not have to invest in maintaining an expensive Local and Wide Area Network.”

The software has a number of core functions designed to streamline processes. These include estimating; creation of job bags, invoices, purchase orders, packing labels and shipping documents; capture of employee time including actual cost versus estimated; exporting of reports to Excel and debtor and creditor management. Management can define who has access to each level of the system.

Specific modules which will be featured at the show including the Wide-Format Quoting Module and the new Label & Carton Packaging Module, which will be demonstrated for the first time at Visual Impact.

“The Label Module features a knife register, which allows knives to be listed by size, type, colour and codes, automatic selection of the optimally-sized cylinder for each job, automatic repeat length calculation, and quantity-based press selection,” Kumar says. “For cartons, the features are similar, with input for interlocking designs and a stock grain direction selection.”

The Wide-Format Quoting Module supports both roll-fed and flat-bed devices and has a range of handy functions which will be of particular interest to the many visitors from the sign, display and large-format industries attending the Visual Impact Expo.

“Operators can define the area to be used – whether that’s image area, full stock width or full machine bed width – when calculating for speed, and also specify multiple print modes, each with their own individual speeds and make-ready set,” Kumar explains.

“Multiple products can be included in the one quote, then converted into individual jobs linked by a common reference code, making production and total job tracking easy,” he adds.

Importantly, all Quote & Print’s solutions are designed on a modular basis, so companies can purchase the complete package, or just the modules that suit their business and budgets.

“For new users and those migrating from a legacy system, this might be the majority of modules,” Kumar explains. “A smaller print business may budget to buy and implement one or two modules each year. Whatever their requirements, this modular strategy means we can provide the right functionality and ROI for each business…and then work with them to tailor the system as their needs grow and change.”

Visit Quote & Print for a demonstration on Stand F30 at Visual Impact. The company will be one of more than 90 exhibitors who will display their latest innovations at the Sydney Showground, Sydney Olympic Park from 3-5 May 2023. Click here to register or go to visualimpact.org.au for more information

  • Latest feature-packed Kongsberg iPC streamlines and simplifies production to bring designs to life

Kongsberg Precision Cutting Systems (Kongsberg PCS) has unveiled its new software, specifically developed to make it even easier for users to harness the power and precision of its digital cutting solutions and get the most out of their investment.

The new iPC (i-cut Production Console) version 2.6 is packed with a host of new features and upgrades, making the integrated software solution that comes as standard with Kongsberg cutting tables the only production software that users need.

“The iPC’s intuitive user interface was designed to enable straightforward and efficient operation for all users,” said Koen Van Reybroeck, Kongsberg PCS product manager. “It enables users to import and automatically set-up files, customize production runs, calibrate tools and save settings,” he said. “With iPC you can set up standard production workflows, create simple designs and layouts, and run production manually or fully automated.

“With this new version, we have introduced a raft of additional new features and functionalities that help streamline the entire production process, making it faster and easier to achieve optimum cutting results and bring designs to life,” said Koen.

The new Kongsberg iPC 2.6 boasts a whole host of new features, including:

    • New iPC Prep Station - a standalone, offline preparation tool that can be used for file and job preparation prior to production, without interrupting the production station or production time estimation

    • Updated iPC job list – now split into active jobs/jobs still to go into production; additional job history viewing and exporting options; new reports for order or finishing department. Produced jobs history can also now be exported as a .CSV file

    • Improved batch production - use ordered copies on job in batch production, a new way to produce different and mostly unprinted jobs in sequence without user intervention

    • On the fly estimation of open jobs - estimation now updated as soon as a modification is done in Layer or Production tabs, or to job geometry. Updated estimate displayed in open job and jobs list, showing modifications’ impact on production time before producing the job

    • Print preview for JDF files - jobs using JDF files that contain print preview images are now displayed when hovering over cut preview image

    • Windows 11 support - updated documentation and support connectivity for Windows 11; supported operating systems are now Windows 11, Windows 10, and Windows 7

    • Kongsberg Connect HUB V1.0 – iPC’s new internal data management system improves connectivity with third party software providers, functioning as a central working interface to and from iPC

    Work quicker, without interruption

“With iPC 2.6. we are introducing the new launch iPC Prep Station,” said Koen. “An offline preparation tool for the production table, iPC Prep Station is a standalone version of iPC that is not connected to a Kongsberg cutting table. This means users operators can undertake time-saving and crucial file and job preparation prior to the production process, without causing any delay or interruption to either the production station or production time estimation,” he said.

iPC Prep Station uses the exact same tooling and mapping presets as the Kongsberg table in production, so job preparation can happen even faster - but crucially without a need to be around the cutting table in production.

    New integration with software partners

“With this latest version, we also continue to improve integrations with partner software, delivering greater connectivity to iPC and the Kongsberg tables,” added Koen. “This improved connectivity means users can now also take full advantage of a production-focused workflow, with new software partner integrations focusing on automated file setup, QR code production and intelligent file intake.

“Importantly, this also means they can benefit from the comprehensive Kongsberg automation portfolio, from manual feeding and Multizone production through to roll feeders, sheet feeders and robotics,” he said.

“These new features serve to protect users’ investment, ensuring they enjoy full support for all future additional functionality - only developed in iPC – as well as benefitting from advanced Kongsberg tooling, such as Fast Tool Adaptor or Dual Heavy Duty Unit, and all future tools,” said Koen.

  • Leading ink developer, NUtec Digital Ink has achieved ECO PASSPORT by OEKO-TEX accreditation for select products within its water-based Aquamarine ink range, certifying them for sustainable textile and clothing production.

OEKO-TEX ECO PASSPORT is an independent certification system for chemicals, colourants and auxiliaries used in the textile industry, ensuring that each individual component meets statutory requirements and is not harmful to human health. The ECO PASSPORT by OEKO-TEX programme is also an accepted certification standard for chemical formulations conforming to the Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) Foundation’s Manufacturing Restricted Substances List (MRSL).

After undergoing rigorous testing by the Hohenstein Institute in Germany,  NUtec’s Aquamarine AQ10-DST-HC dye sublimation ink range achieved ECO PASSPORT by OEKO-TEX accreditation and is now listed in the OEKO-TEX Buying Guide. Companies looking for safer input alternatives for textile production rely on the OEKO-TEX Buying Guide to find suitable suppliers and materials with sustainability credentials.

The Aquamarine AQ10-DST-HC set of CMYK as well as fluorescent pink and fluorescent yellow water-based inks may now be specified with confidence when choosing sustainable dye sublimation inks for textile production. Our Aquamarine AQ10-DST-HC product range with its ECO PASSPORT badge of authenticity on the label, will help clothing and textile producers make informed decisions in order to protect both their brand reputations as well as the health of their customers”, says Darren Claassens, head of sales and marketing at NUtec Digital Ink.

  • UK headquartered narrow web printing ink specialist Pulse Roll Label Products is helping printers beat rising energy bills with the launch of its new dual cure UV LED ink range, PureTone DC®

The new high-performance ink from global supplier Pulse Roll Label Products can be cured with UV LED lamps, meaning the curing process uses just a fraction of the power of traditional UV lamps. Being fully Food Packaging Compliant, new PureTone DC is suitable for label converters supplying industry sectors that require compliance to food packaging regulations and guidelines, and the range also includes CMYK+OGV for extended colour gamut printing.

LED lamps used with PureTone DC not only deliver a more stable light ensuring consistency of curing and print, but they can also be switched on and off instantly – unlike traditional UV lights, which must be left running – and they also last many times longer.

Crucially, PureTone DC’s dual cure formulation means printers can use just one set of inks with both UV and LED curing presses, delivering further efficiency gains through avoiding unnecessary and costly inventory and ink management complexity, as well as being able to convert across press by press. The new ink also matches the impressive strength of others in the Pulse range, making it easy to compare and match colours as necessary.

Gary Seward, Managing Director of Pulse Roll Label Products, said: “LED curing is looking like the future of the industry – and PureTone DC puts Pulse Roll Label Products squarely at the forefront. Offering increased performance compared with other suppliers, and with a dual cure formulation, this new solution gives printers the versatility and freedom they need to switch to LED ink at their own convenience.

“At a time when our customers’ energy bills are soaring, solutions like PureTone DC that help cut costs with rapid, energy-efficient curing can make all the difference. As well as needing less energy to run, the UV LED lamps that cure this ink last many times longer than traditional UV equivalents, with output remaining consistent over the bulb’s lifespan. What’s more, disposal is also significantly less complex with UV LED bulbs,” he said.

“We’ve even seen improved cure and adhesion over the existing ranges during extensive beta testing, so this really is the next generation of PureTone ink,” added Gary. “The message is clear – UV LED technology like PureTone DC is better for your business, your staff, your customers and the planet.”

Unlike some LED inks, PureTone DC’s dual cure formulation means the initiators within the ink are activated when exposed to either traditional UV lamps or UV LED light. This feature is designed to help printers gradually phase out their existing mercury-based curing equipment without the need for expensive initial investments. As an LED curing ink, PureTone DC can also cure at lower temperatures, making it suitable for a wider range of substrates including heat-sensitive thin films.

With the United Nations (UN) having committed to phasing down mercury use in a wide range of products and processes due to the substance’s harmful environmental and health effects, the ease of disposal of UV LED lamps is also another benefit to printers.

“There are already significant restrictions in place on disposal of mercury and introducing it into the waste stream, and these regulations are only tightening,” said Gary. “With different rules and procedures across different countries around the world – particularly with regard to landfill – printing businesses are looking to transition away now, to get ahead of the changes on the horizon.

“The ongoing uncertainty over the future of mercury regulations in flexo printing, coupled with the enormous cost and energy benefits, means there’s never been a better time to make the change to UV LED ink,” he said.

Mox was developed as a collaborative, scalable solution for marketers, packaging and project managers, creatives, and all internal and external stakeholders who create and distribute product packaging content. “It delivers real-time project and task visibility, improves collaboration, and helps accelerate speed to market,” said Adrian. “One VP of content and creative said they loved how Mox ‘speaks the language of different engines of the business’, and that’s a great way of looking at it. Mox enables users to find all the information in one place and at the same time – everything from specific color codes and requirements through to details of workflow and processes all at once.

“We are absolutely thrilled by the reception we’ve had since unveiling Mox, and we’re looking forward to working with so many new companies to help them connect teams, content, and consumers like never before.”

  • FUJIFILM Imaging Colorants, Ltd., has announced global commercial availability of an expanded range of colours to its series of high performance RxD pigment dispersions for water-based inkjet ink formulation. Fujifilm now offers dispersions in Orange PO71, Green PG7, and Violet PV23 pigments. The new inkjet pigment dispersions are now available world-wide through Fujifilm’s Ink Solutions Group.

OGV colours are typically used to formulate ink sets that extend the gamut of a print system beyond the colour space achievable with CMYK, which is particularly important for achieving higher vibrancy, colour accuracy and matching brand spot colours in packaging, textile and commercial print applications.

Grant Murney, product manager of RxD inkjet pigment dispersions, says “In developing the new RxD Orange, Green and Violet dispersions we’ve carefully selected the best polymers and processing conditions to ensure optimum stability and print performance for our customers, in line with the standard CMYK products already in the RxD product range.”

RxD pigment dispersions are used in Fujifilm’s aqueous ink developments for OEMs and are available to other ink formulators.

Fujifilm’s RxD dispersions are highly stable and suitable for ink formulation across a wide range of applications. They are engineered with Fujifilm’s proprietary reactive dispersant technology which uses a cross-linked polymer to create a secure cage around the pigment. This provides a stable dispersion that is compatible with a wide range of components used in inkjet ink formulation, enabling the design of stable ink formulations that meet demanding performance requirements. The high-quality pigments used in RxD dispersions comply with Swiss Ordinance SR817.023.21, making indirect food contact compliant applications accessible.

Last year, Fujifilm announced a further expansion within a $47 million investment in its global RxD inkjet dispersion manufacturing capabilities, part of its commitment to meet the growing demand for new applications with aqueous inkjet inks and supporting its global customer base.

Highlights of this new version include 7 new features that will be available for all Version 16 users and a brand-new licensing experience. Additionally, Version 16 is compatible with the newly released macOS Ventura, and more than 50 new Print & Cut drivers have been added to the software’s ISO.

According to Arnaud Fabre, Head of Product at Caldera, says “We were the first RIP solution to partner with Adobe in order to deliver the best PDF Print Engine to the large-format printing industry, and we are now the first to deliver its 6th version with all its enhancements. CalderaRIP keeps improving with state-of-the-art technologies ensuring reliability & top performance for all our users. We are also proud to continue having Pantone Libraries in our solutions to help our customers deliver outstanding results. Caldera users can trust our solutions to deliver what’s best for them— and to address the new challenges of our industry.”

The first major improvement concerns the licensing experience of all Caldera users. Indeed, CalderaDock has been updated to v2.0, and becomes the central application to register and manage the licenses of all Caldera solutions. When registering a new license, the validation process is now fully automated to save time and ease the installation experience.

Powered by the latest version of Adobe PDF Print Engine (v6), CalderaRIP guarantees the user to always print the rendering expected by the designer. Adobe’s state-of-the-art PDF engine makes it easier to manage extended color gamuts, brand colors, varnish and foils with increased performance, predictability and consistency compared to previous versions— making it possible for users to print impeccable results regardless of the application.

Version 16 users will also benefit from the latest FOGRA standards directly in CalderaRIP to save time and considerably reduce waste, while achieving better results. These new standards are available in the PrintStandardVerifier module, to allow users to perform conformity checks before printing.

In addition to these improvements, Version 16 brings a range of new features designed to ease print & cut operations. Operators having several projects with different cut contours will be able to group them into multi-page PDF files and submit them directly to the software to save time. The VisualCut & GrandCut now include new options, such as the possibility to enter a number of passes to easily cut thicker materials, or to rotate jobs by 180 degrees to ease lamination & sublimation workflows. Also, an Editor has been added to GrandCut to help users synchronizing cut methods and materials— saving the need to modify complex XML files to achieve higher cutting precision. The SmartImport & PrintProof features remain exclusive to CalderaCare subscribers, and provide unique automation possibilities in terms of job submission & customer validation. Sebastien Hanssens, VP Marketing & Operations at Caldera, says “With this new version, we’ve shown our commitment to delivering smarter tools to support our customers’ activities. Whether they operate in a small, medium or industrial print shop, operators can automate their processes with Caldera solutions to focus on added-value tasks. We are confident that printing and cutting with CalderaRIP Version 16 is more efficient than ever before, with the guarantee of delivering excellent results no matter the application”.

  • With today’s brands and packaging suppliers facing a catalog of potentially crippling challenges, Esko has developed its latest software innovations specifically to make it easier for people and processes to connect, to automate operations and to drive operational improvements.

“From the energy crisis and the erosion of margins to material shortages and labor and skills deficits, we know there are many significant challenges for businesses today,” said Jan De Roeck, Esko Director of Marketing, Industry Relations and Strategy. “The role of technology and innovation is key in surmounting these challenges. It is now imperative that companies review their current business operations and identify areas where they can make meaningful improvements and drive operational efficiencies in order that they not only survive but thrive.”

It is in this climate that Esko has developed its software version 22.11, bringing to market new technological developments that will advance the industry, helping businesses form a foundation to identify waste, mitigate risk and optimise opportunity while preparing for the predicted megatrends of 2023.

Esko Release 22.11 includes a host of new features, including:

    • Dynamic Subscriptions – a new, cloud-based licensing model for on-premise applications that simplifies global management and distribution of licenses across all sites

    • ArtPro+ GMG OpenColor Connector – enabling smarter working with simplified colour management across systems, with state-of-the-art visualisation and automation tools bringing new levels of colour predictability and efficiency across the workflow

    • Greater flexo automation – with new PlateID automatic placement and the introduction of nested merging in Flexo Engine, delivering more automation and improved efficiency in the plate room

    • Automated workflow improvements – new multi-MIS support in Automation Engine SaaS and new configuration tools in WebCenter to improve user experience

    • New FEFCO standards as parametric tools in ArtiosCAD – Esko is the first to bring to market the new FEFCO (the European Federation of Corrugated Board Manufacturers) design style standards as parametric tools, in its structural design software

    • Integrated Tilia Labs Artificial Intelligence – leverage Artificial Intelligence through Esko Automation Engine; rethink the planning and imposition process and unlock productivity improvements with a seamless interface between prepress data and production data.

“Our key focus with this latest software release is to deliver technology that makes it easier for packaging companies to connect its people and processes, to access data, automate operations and to drive operational efficiency,” said Jan. “Our new Dynamic Subscriptions, for example, are assigned to a group of individuals, rather than one single user. When logging on, each user – wherever they may be based – is simply assigned an available license, provided there are licenses available in the group. When the user ends their session, this license is immediately released back to the group, enabling continuous, uninterrupted access and potentially 24/7 operation without the excessive costs of individual licenses for all.

“Similarly, we know the manual re-separation of images and artwork to match brands’ color accuracy demands can be a laborious and error-prone process,” said Jan. “By automating the re-separation using GMG OpenColor technology – via the new unique integration with Esko ArtPro+ in software version 22.11 – prepress professionals can now accurately visualise colour in before-and-after states and assess color deviations on-screen with precise Delta E readouts.”

Following the recent acquisition of Tilia Labs, Esko is also delivering on the need of brand owners and converters to connect and integrate the entire value chain through upstream digitalisation. “Tilia Labs’ tilia Phoenix solution has now been integrated with Esko Automation Engine,” said Jan. “Featuring intelligent algorithms for sheet layout, estimation and planning, this underlines our commitment to delivering integrated software and hardware solutions that accelerate the go-to-market process for consumer packaged goods. We are filling the gap between converters and brand owners by providing tools to help the converters do the job better, faster and more efficiently.”

Jan said the new Esko Release 22.11 will be available for all Esko software customers from Wednesday, November 9th, before a live webinar event on Tuesday 22nd November examines the new features in depth. “We will take a detailed look at the megatrends set to land in 2023, the issues the industry is likely to face and the challenges and opportunities these will present to businesses,” he said. “Our product experts and customers will share compelling presentations and demonstrations on the role innovation and technology has to play, diving into key topics and showcasing how businesses can advance their digital transformation journey and ultimately build a more sustainable future.”

  • Solimar Systems, Inc., the provider of leading workflow software solutions for print production and digital communications, has released version 9.2 of its dynamic output management suite, Solimar® Print Director™ Enterprise (SPDE).

SPDE plays a crucial role in the overall Solimar Chemistry™ platform, providing an onramp to PDF-centric workflows while offering robust data optimizations, conversions, job management, and device connectivity for non-PDF workflows. SPDE connects host computers to production print devices that normally do not directly interact, to provide a powerful enterprise output management system.

Enhanced with new capabilities to expand its application and ease of use, SPDE version 9.2 features an intuitive operator interface for improved overall job control, enhanced IPP security for compliance, and introduces new Job Definition Format (JDF) compatibility to better control finishing elements of the print process.

JDF Finishing Controls remove the need to convert PDF files into PostScript or other formats to further optimize the workflow. PDF finishing information in SPDE 9.2 is controlled by a rules-based system of JDF commands using conditional logic to map PDF file finishing commands to the required JDF format, saving processing and production time. Printers can now edit, maintain and add finishing commands throughout a PDF workflow, even when the source file is not PDF, thus supporting multiple industry standards.

With Solimar’s continued focus on data security, the Secure IPP Print Server™ within SPDE 9.2 now features additional authentication support, further strengthening this crucial capability. Other enhancements include an expanded API for the submission of jobs, font upgrades, and job ticket conversions.

The award-winning ReadyPDF® optimization module has been enhanced in version 9.2 with new features to expand its applications and simplify its user interface. ReadyPDF now includes a new Preflight Mode that can detect certain PDF characteristics, such as image and text properties, and invoke necessary optimizations as needed. For example, if a user needs to flatten transparencies in a PDF, ReadyPDF can determine if there are transparency elements in the file. If no transparency elements are used, those jobs can bypass the flattening process, saving significant processing time.

ReadyPDF is available as a module within SPDE 9.2 and as a stand-alone subscription offering, ReadyPDF Prepress Server.

These additional capabilities underscore the flexibility and utility of SPDE for managing high-volume variable print. SPDE not only allows users to flexibly integrate various applications and printing systems, but to do so across a broad spectrum of data streams including AFP, IPDS, Xerox VIPP, PostScript, PCL, Xerox DJDE/Metacode, TIFF, and PDF. Moreover, SPDE is integrated with other components of the Solimar Chemistry™ platform to enable intelligent batching, job and piece-level tracking, postal optimization and other valuable capabilities."

Mary Ann Rowan, Chief Experience Officer at Solimar Systems, comments: “We're thrilled to bring these major upgrades to our global customers. Some early adopters have shared that they are now able to retain jobs in-house that were previously outsourced which improves their overall ROI.” Rowan continues, “SPDE 9.2, and all of our innovative products, are off-the-shelf configurable by end users and do not require coding or custom services. Solimar solutions are available through our extensive partner network enabling customers to choose the best solutions for their production environment. This makes Solimar the preferred partner for many global businesses.”
